Mental Toughness and the Numbers Game

Business of Training Add comments

Business is up and running. You have a few clients you train. Enough to pay a few bills here and there. But it is not enough. You need to save up some money for all the luxuries that life can offer, a new computer, car, house and travel. Do you only tweak your business when you have to or do you plan it carefully from the start so that there are no screw ups along the way?

This is not about living it day to day and hoping that people will call you up begging for you to train them. This is not about you being the most qualified just because you have all the relevant degrees, money well spent on education and you are the best looking muppet in a singlet top and short shorts. You know what? It does not matter.

Being a Personal Trainer and being in the business is tough. No silver lining that the general public perceive. “Oh, you’ve got such a great job! I wish I could just do what you do and train people all day. My job is boring.” You will hear a lot of that and believe me, there is no cherry on the top or “Advance to Go” card. The business is ruthless and the attrition rate of Personal Trainers in the industry is almost 80%. Most trainers get muscled out by those who have been in the industry for yonks, others just get burned by the insane number of hours they work.

Which one will you be? One of the best or crippled like the rest?

Rule Number 1: If you have Failed to Plan, you Plan to Fail.

This is the same for anything in life. Even in the business of transforming someones life. Right from the word go, there must be a blueprint of what needs to happen. Eat well, exercise right. Same for your business. Plan well, execute perfectly, reap the profits.

Rule Number 2: It’s a Numbers Game.

As with every sales game, you are selling a service, a product and or both. You may get by just selling one or two packs a month, but honestly did you really come into the game to just get by? I hope the answer is “No”. Because if it is not, then turn this page off and go surf the net for the joke of the day because you are wasting your time here. You’re in it for the profit. You’re in it for the returns. You’re in it to maximise profits and to build a fortune. You need to sell more service and more product. It’s just that simple. And we’ll show you how.

Rule Number 3: Get over Rejection. Quick.

If you ask someone to train with you and you get a no, dont be disheartened, you probably smell or you suck at presenting. Simple as that. Whatever it is, do NOT let it affect your mood. We are going to encounter rejection all our life. Some people take it to heart and others shake it off. You can guess who got laid and who remained a virgin.

Rule Number 4: When the Going Gets Tough, You Get Tougher!

Your business plan will project profit margin that has a linear line at a 45 degree angle. But you know what? The path that your business will take will not look anything like that. It will look like a wriggly line which reflects the good days and also the bad. You may have some days that you sell packs and some days that you sell nothing and also days that you lose your clients. Boo-hoo. Don’t have a cry or go home to mummy. Suck it up, shake it off and lift your pelvic floor. The business is ruthless and if you stop for one second to feel sorry for yourself, it will chew you up and spit you right back out. 95% of all new businesses fail in its first 3 years. Are you the hard-nosed seasoned trainer who would not let himself fall even if he trips over so many times? Or are you the timid-run-to-mummy-trainer who buckles when there are interest rate rises?

Rule Number 5: Stay Focused

Stay focused to your goals and your commitment to the business. This will fuel the flames of passion that you have for what you do and what you are about the achieve. Remember why you started the journey of being a Personal Trainer. Go back to your goal setting and your business plan. Refer to the positive reaffirmations you have written on post-its pasted all around your computer screen. “I am doing fine!” “I am the Best Trainer in the World!” Know it, feel it and talk it.
